THE IMMORTALS Issue 08 - Page 12

So at long last, we come to this long tale that has technically been told since October of last year.  6 months of one continuous storyline, all taking place in November.  Why November?  Because that's when the Chron-Wraith Challenge happened.

Allow me to briefly talk about that challenge.  When I saw what the challenge was, I figured that most people would go down the classic route of constantly fighting the Chron-Wraiths, instead of finding another solution, so I decided to go in a different direction, one that was possible with the characters I had at the time and the powers they possessed.  And thus, the friendly Chron-Wraith became a constant part of my comics for several months.  I always found the designs of the wraiths kind of cute, despite being Eldritch Horrors, and so I focused more on that cuteness, and I feel that at the end of this arc I've managed to create a memorable character from a basic, generic enemy from a single challenge.

The Chron-Wraith proved to be an extremely useful addition to the comic story-wise.  It allowed me to do the final Moon battle between Shard Master and Hammer Girl the way I wanted to, and thanks to it being an Eldritch, it proved to be a great way to bring back the Great Library as a setting, which has led to a new Cleric, and the return of Titan into the team.

...which is why it's so hard to say goodbye to him.  Having the Chron-Wraith stay behind in the Great Library was always the plan, but, kind of like Katherine, I really want him to stick around.  However, I do have other stories that I want to focus on, and other characters to add, and if I was going to keep him around, I would have to create a Character Profile for him, and I've only got a limited number of those right now.  The fact that I've been allowed to tell this story in this particular way is something that I am extremely grateful for.  So a serious thank you to :icondoctorvorlon:, who's challenge proved to be incredibly inspiring for me, and led to me doing some of my best work in a long while.

Some of you might have also wondered what was with the Librarian hanging around this entire time.  Well, in the original draft of this story, :iconknightslayer115:'s character Knight Slayer was going to be chasing the heroes through the multiverse, trying to reap the souls of Ellie and Emily, since they technically died, with him finally catching up during the final battle, and helping to resurrect Emily into an Angel of the Cardinal Sun.  However, for various reasons, that story didn't go ahead, but I still decided to keep the Angel thing, which led me to replace Knight Slayer with that miscellaneous Librarian for the duration of the comic.  Now he serves another purpose of taking over the role of storyteller, and covering that plot hole of "who runs the Library now that Zildrakoth is gone?" that I unintentionally created back in Issue 03.

One last mention.  The girl at the end, "Miss Wyvern", is a character that initially belonged to a friend of mine, :iconlittleazurewyvern:.  For almost a year now, she's been extremely supportive of my comics, and really awesome to work with, and about a year ago, I decided to add Wyvern as a character in the comics, pretty much in the role you're seeing her in now, as the land lady for the new base of operations.  I will be adding her as a support character in the DU, and this version of Azure Wyvern will be my adaptation of her, just in case some people don't like the idea of me using someone else's character.  This is basically a massive fan-shout out to a good friend of mine, who's been supporting my work for a very long time, and is probably the reason why I stuck with these comics at some points.

Speaking of the base of operations, say hello to Immortal Manor, based off of a real world location, Antonio Hall, which I live just down the road from here in Christchurch; an abandoned Mansion in the middle of the city.

A big thanks to everyone that's been supporting this comic, and I look forward to starting a new Issue and a new story arc next month, and I hope you'll all join me then.  Have a wonderful day.

Fun fact: the Chron-Wraiths weren't always going to look the way they ultimately did. I went through quite a number of designs and concepts before arriving where I did, including, but not limited to: crystalline beings, gaseous ghosts, and disembodied heads with lanky arms growing out of their ears. I wonder how things might have developed if I had gone with one of those designs instead.
